Augmented Reality

introduction

Augmented reality is a technology that superimposes digital content on real world objects. It augments the real world with additional information in meaningful ways, thus the word ‘Augmented’ reality. This augmentation can manifest through multiple modalities such as augmenting the camera feed of user’s mobile, or by projecting information on devices worn by user such as spectacles or helmets. In order to correctly register the digital content with real objects, sophisticated computer technologies are used and some examples include GPS based geolocation, device orientation sensors, special printed markers, markerless image recognition and Computer vision based 3D scanning of environment (SLAM).

use cases

The technology is already being adopted rapidly in all kinds of use cases such as ecommerce, marketing, entertainment, gaming, education and communication. To understand the impact of this technology one needs to just look at innovative usage of it in various fields.

ecommerce

AR has started to affect many parts of e-commerce domain. Due to its nature of being connected with real world, it is being utilized for increasing customer engagement and retention. Be it virtual try on of glasses, jewellery or clothing or to arranging virtual furniture in real room, the practical usage of AR allows a novel shopping experience. It bridges the gap between real and online shopping. Tracking user's facial feature and showing make-up applied on face in real time is a novel use of AR technology.

Entertainment & Gaming

New type of games and entertainment media is emerging as a result of AR adoption and visibility to masses. Games like Pokemon Go and Ingress have proved the potential of what AR can do to gaming and entertainment field. These AR experiences range from very small apps such as building virtual dominos on the table or shooting zombies appearing on mobile camera feed to the sophisticated games like first person shooter on Microsoft Hololens.

Marketing

AR has proven track record in engaging customers and grabbing their attention. Adding markers on print media and then augmenting them with interactive videos and images when scanned through the mobile phones has generated a new stream of RoI and life into print marketing material. By using geotagging, one can point a mobile phone towards a hotel to know current offers and discounts, or rooms available. Advertising can finally be made interactive, when user points their camera of a McDonald sign board they can see current offers and unlock hidden discounts. The aim of all of these applications is to increase the customer engagement and retention.

Education & Training

Gone are the days of reading manuals to understand complex machinery, now with the help of AR the information can be superimposed directly on the machine with multimedia instructions and step by step procedure done in real time. AR allows visualizations of educational content in 3D, registered with real world objects. Now a medical student can actually see the internal bone structure superimposed on the patient’s body, allowing to him to get trained in complex operating procedures. Students can now see interactive media when they point their mobile phones or tablets on their text books, engaging them and helping grasp the concepts better. Education becomes fun with AR.

Communication

Snapchat became the most valuable communication platform, thanks to the wonders of AR. The face lens feature, where funny emojis are superimposed on the user's face in real time was an instant hit. Video conferencing augmented with digital content is not a future trend anymore but is an essential feature now. With the help of wearable AR devices, it is now possible to collaborate in a natural manner. Controlling augmented 3D models using gesture and voice based interfaces has allowed new idioms into collaborative communication. This trend is going to pick up further when cheaper and better AR devices hit market in the very near future.
